“Good morning. Osama Bin Laden is dead,” that is how Meredith Vieira opened the “Today” show this morning as all the networks continued coverage which began last night on the news that Bin Laden had been killed in Pakistan. On ABC, “World News” anchor Diane Sawyer was in co-anchoring “GMA” with George Stephanopoulos. Robin Roberts Christiane Amanpour and Chris Cuomo reporting from Ground Zero.
“Today” rebranded its special edition of the show titled, “The Death of Osama Bin Laden” and had Matt Lauer at Ground Zero. Tom Brokaw, who was anchor of NBC Nightly News when the U.S. was attacked on 9/11, was in Ground Zero with Lauer. “Last night I got a call giving me a heads up,” said Brokaw, “And I said ‘I need to know more.’ He said, ‘It’s somebody we have been looking for for a long time.”
All the shows also interviewed many of the people who Americans got to know very well following the 9/11 attacks: including Alice Hoagland who lost her son on Flight 93, Howard Lutnick, chairman and CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald who lost his brother and 650 other employees in the attack on the World Trade Center and former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
On CBS’ “The Early Show” Erica Hill, anchoring from Ground Zero opened the show with, “Good Morning. Osama Bin Laden, killed by u.s. troops in a daring early morning raid in Pakistan.”
CBS’s chief foreign affairs correspondent Lara Logan returned to reporting last night, covering the angle of Pakistan’s role in the operation. Logan was assaulted on assignment in Egypt in February; a story she told last night on “60 Minutes.”
