Bad Matchups Bad for Ratings, But Not for Attendence

The SEC Championship game featured No. 1 Auburn against No. 19 South Carolina. As expected, Cam Newton and the Tigers rolled their opponents, and the broadcast struggled to match last season’s impressive numbers.

“Auburn’s win over South Carolina drew a 6.3 overnight rating on CBS Saturday, down 47 percent from last year (ALA/UF: 11.8), and down 39 percent from 2008 (UF/ALA: 10.4).” Sports Business Journal
reports.

The ACC title game, on the other hand, found plenty of in-person fan support despite the fact that neither Virginia Tech nor Florida State are particularly good.

The game, held in Charlotte after five years in Florida, sold out, with 28,000 tickets going before the teams were known.

ACC chairman John Swofford called it a “big hit,” although he certainly would love to have the SEC Championship’s TV ratings.
