August 2015 Ratings: CNN Remains in No. 2 Spot Among Cable News Nets

By Brian Flood

CNN finished the month of August as the No. 2 cable news network (behind Fox News) among the key A25-54 demo in both total day and prime time viewers. This marks the 14th consecutive month CNN finished No. 2–the network’s longest demo winning streak over MSNBC in seven years. Despite finishing second, CNN was the only network to lose viewers compared to August 2014 when CNN’s ratings were heightened during coverage of the events surrounding Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Missouri.

The ratings for August 2015:

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 585,000 Total Viewers / 183,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 438,000 Total Viewers / 128,000K A25-54

CNN was down -13 percent in viewers and down -17 percent in the demo for total day viewing, while dropping -9 percent in viewers and -17 in the demo in prime time. Despite seeing its lowest A25-54 delivery since July 2014, New Day beat MSNBC’s Morning Joe in the demo for the 14th straight month.

Several dayside shows saw the lowest 25-54 deliveries all year, including from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. ET and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET. Still, all of CNN’s dayside (9a-4p) beat MSNBC dayside in both total viewers and the demo.

CNN Original Series Rank Either #1 or #2 in Time Period

For the 14th straight month, CNN was the #2 cable news network in August among adults 25-54 in both Total Day and Primetime. That is the longest winning streak over MSNBC in the key sales demo in over seven years.

CNN was also #2 among total viewers, ahead of MSNBC, in Total Day (6a-6a). Buoyed by its coverage of the Republican primary debate, Fox News was the only cable news network to grow in August versus a year ago among both adults 25-54 and total viewers. CNN’s viewing levels were down compared to last year because of heightened viewership during the unrest a year ago in Ferguson.

Of particular note, CNN’s morning program, New Day, continued to beat MSNBC’s Morning Joe. For the 14th straight month, New Day topped Morning Joe in the all-important 25-54 sales demo. In fact, Morning Joe again fell to last place among all cable news morning programs in the sales demo, behind Fox News, CNN and HLN’s Morning Express.
