Ann Curry in Pakistan

Ann Curry was not on the “Today” show this morning, and now we know why. She’s on her way to Pakistan to report the latest on the aftermath of the death of Osama Bin Laden for “Today” and “Nightly News.”

The Bin Laden news pushed back the announcement of Curry being named co-anchor of “Today.” The New York Times reported Sunday night a news conference was being planned for Monday morning. Meredith Vieira who has been Matt Lauer’s co-anchor for the last five years, is expected to leave the show next month.

Another indication the Curry announcement was to come earlier this week, along with the promotions of Natalie Morales to news anchor and White House Correspondent Savannah Guthrie to Morales’ national correspondent slot, is that Guthrie was in New York Monday, reporting on the Bin Laden story for “Today” and joining Brian Williams at Ground Zero for “Nightly.” She was also in New York yesterday for her MSNBC show, but was back in Washington this morning.

Curry has traveled to Pakistan several times for NBC News. She interviewed former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto just two months before her assassination in December 2007, and she sat down with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari in his first-ever interview with an American news organization.
