Several TV news anchors and reporters who rushed to Japan last weekend, are already back in New York.
As radiation fears rose, networks began reassessing coverage and anchors began packing the bags they’d never really had time to unpack. Christiane Amanpour left Tuesday. Diane Sawyer and Bill Weir found flights out on Wednesday while Chris Jansing, Soledad O’Brien returned home last night. Sawyer anchored “World News” Wednesday evening after the 13 hour flight. Jansing was back on the air for her 10amET MSNBC show this morning. Harry Smith, who lead CBS’ coverage from Japan early in the week, was back in the New York studio today anchoring coverage of Pres. Obama’s remarks on Libya (which was in a split-screen presentation during the last 40 seconds of the Oakland v. Texas NCAA tournament game).
Fox News’ Shepard Smith and NBC’s Lester Holt are also returning home. CNN’s Anderson Cooper and NBC’s Ann Curry are among the anchors who remain in Japan. Cooper tweeted earlier today:
