Among Demands In Gulf Crisis: Shut Down Al Jazeera

By Chris Ariens

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have sent a list of 13 demands to Qatar meant to bring an end to a 3-week diplomatic standoff. One of the demands, according to NPR, is the shutting down of Al Jazeera, the 21-year old news channel that is owned by the government of Qatar.

Al Jazeera runs 6 channels, including Al Jazeera English which, in the U.S., can be streamed on YouTube and Facebook. The Doha-based company shut down Al Jazeera America in April 2013, after losing hundreds of million of dollars in its three years on air.

Al Jazeera English is giving comprehensive coverage to the crisis, including an acknowledgement of the demands. “It gets interesting down here for us, of course,” said anchor Kamahl Santamaria on the news program The Grid Friday afternoon. “This demand to shut down the Al Jazeera Media Network and its affiliate stations.”
