Al Roker Goes From Promoting Healthy School Lunches To Plugging Twinkies

By Alex Weprin

Being a morning show anchor is a life filled with contradictions. You have to be likable, but still have gravitas, you need to be able to interview the president, but also a toddler that can shoot hoops.

For NBC’s Al Roker the past few days, it apparently means promoting healthy eating one day, then playing Santa Claus with a truck full of sugary treats the next.

Yesterday, Roker gave the opening general session at the School Nutrition Association’s general conference. The conference promotes healthy eating among schoolkids. Roker has become an advocate for healthy causes since losing weight himself a few years ago, and has even written books on the subject.

Then this morning rolls around, and “Today” was set to take the first delivery of Twinkies since Hostess reopened. The company decided to have Roker be the face of the delivery, and ride down to Rockefeller Plaza in the Twinkie Truck, throwing Twinkies to all the boys and girls — and adults — along the way.
