Al Roker Forecasts the Future of Livestreaming

There’s a new wave of video creators taking over social media. An unlike the YouTube and Vine stars of the past, Meerkat and Periscope personalities have a new audience of live viewers.

It’s a style that closely resembles traditional TV broadcasts, which is why longtime Today show weather anchor Al Roker set up Al Roker Labs—a project to experiment with livestreaming apps.

We sat down with Roker to talk about video apps, if livestreaming is here to stay and why brands are going vertical with video (even if he doesn’t think they should be).

“Right now, the stuff that resonates with people is live,” Roker said. “At first, it’s kind of novel, but that novelty will wear off. So you better have some good content and interesting people.”
