Al Jazeera America Ready for Black History Month

By Brian Flood

al-jazeera-america-130Al Jazeera America will celebrate Black History Month by examining race in America with all-new content throughout February. The hash tag #brandingblack will drive the network’s social media campaign, designed to raise questions about the marketing and commercialization of “blackness.”

Starting tomorrow, AJAM will have a new episode of “Talk to Al Jazeera” every Sunday at 5:30pmET, focusing on conversations with black leaders and those who inspire others. American ballet dancer Misty Copeland, musician Akon and director Rain Pryor will be featured throughout the month.

Each Friday in February, “Real Money with Ali Velshi” will have Black History Month-related episodes. The episodes will feature Nike releasing a “Black History Month” collection, if the month is relevant to younger African Americans and a profile of Ferguson, Missouri.

The network will also feature several “Race in America” pieces throughout its programming. Multiracial citizens, blacks in Seattle, and the influence of social media on race are all scheduled to be among the topics covered.
