After Six Years As Evening News EP, Jim Murphy In Talks About New Assignment

Jim Murphy led the CBS Evening News for six years, “longer than any other executive producer in its more than 50-year history,” CBS
noted in its press release today. Murphy is in talks with CBS about a
new assignment in the news division.

“Jim came to me a while ago and said that he wanted a new challenge,” Sean McManus says. “I have tremendous respect for Jim’s talents and his accomplishments as the leader of the broadcast, and he should be very proud of the job he did. Jim and I will continue to discuss his future role at CBS News.”

Last spring, Murphy “oversaw the transition from Dan Rather, who stepped down as anchor after 24 years, to his interim replacement, Bob Schieffer,” the New York Times says. “Mr. Murphy has worked with Mr. Schieffer to make the current iteration of the program more centered on its correspondents, and this fall its ratings are up when compared to the same period last year.”
