After 30 Years, John Zarrella to Depart CNN

John Zarrella, who has been part of the fabric of CNN for more than 30 years, will be leaving the network at the end of the year.

Zarrella has been CNN’s Miami Bureau chief since it was established in December 1983. He’s covered countless hurricanes, refugee crises, even a volcanic eruption in the Caribbean. He was the principal correspondent for CNN’s coverage of the U.S. space program; he was along the Gulf Coast for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and he covered the plights of Elian Gonzales and Terry Schiavo.

Zarrella joined CNN in November 1981 as an EP in Atlanta. Earlier in his career he worked at WTVJ in Miami, WBAL in Baltimore and WXIA in Atlanta.

The network is still working out who will take over for Zarrella in the bureau.
