A Tale of Two Interviews: Donald Rumsfeld on CBS’ ‘Late Show’ and MSNBC’s ‘Andrea Mitchell Reports’

By Alex Weprin

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has been making the rounds to talk about his new memoir, Known and Unknown. Last night he was a guest on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” and his afternoon appeared on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”

Not surprisingly, the Letterman interview was much lighter, though the talk show host couldn’t resist taking a few jabs at Rumsfeld’s former boss:

And then there was Mitchell’s interview, which is one of the hardest-hitting interviews on daytime cable news in recent memory:

Of course, the Mitchell interview will likely raise a lot of hackles from partisans, with Republicans chastising the anchor for being too hard on Rumsfeld, and Democrats asking why she was not asking these tough questions in the lead-up top the war in Iraq.
