David Westin Prepares for Life on Camera

When Bloomberg launches its new morning news show Monday, it will be a major shift for David Westin, the former president of ABC News who will co-anchor Bloomberg GO alongside Stephanie Ruhle.

“I actually suggested to him years ago that he ought to replace me on Good Morning America,” Charlie Gibson told the Associated Press. “You’d make more money and you wouldn’t have to fire people,” Gibson said.

Gibson did, however, recommend Westin during a lunch with Bloomberg Media chief executive Justin Smith, who quickly concluded it was the right decision. When he took the job, Westin reached out to the ABC News anchors he knew best: Gibson, Ted Koppel, Diane Sawyer, and George Stephanopoulos. “He already has a new appreciation for things they once told him that he never quite understood,” Smith said.

The launch comes as Josh Tyrangiel, the editor of Bloomberg Businessweek, leaves the company. Tyrangiel, whose last day is today, may be headed to Vice. The New York Times reports Tyrangiel may take a position overseeing Vice’s daily news show on HBO.
