9/11, Seven Years Later: How the Cablers Covered

By SteveK

The cable channels have been dipping in and out of 9/11 remembrance coverage throughout the morning, beginning early as the first moment of silence took place at 8:46amET, which CNN, FNC, MSNBC and HLN took live. CNN and FNC have been switching between ceremonies at The White House, the Pentagon, in New York City at Ground Zero and of Sen. John McCain’s appearance in Shanksville, PA.

At 9amET, MSNBC took the step, as they have in the past, of switching to a replay of the Today show’s 9/11/01 broadcast, with anchors Katie Couric and Matt Lauer. MSNBC aired portions of today’s speeches and commemorations during a break around 10:30amET.

The business news channels took some of the 9/11 special coverage as well, with CNBC, FBN and Bloomberg all pausing for the first moment of silence with a look in at The White House (they also showed moments of silence at different stock exchange locations). CNBC quickly cut to a commercial break following the moment of silence at 8:46amET, while FBN and Bloomberg moved to a ceremony in New York.
