In the current issue of Newsweek, Matthew Philips talks to both the current and former EP of 60 Minutes’ about the shows success over the past 40 years. “It took off like a big-assed bird,” says Don Hewitt, the show’s EP until 2004.

“Our success is a direct reflection of America’s hunger for news,” says current EP Jeff Fager of it’s more recent strong ratings.

Philips also takes a shot at the competition in closing the piece. “Its competitors, meanwhile, have been too busy catching predators to notice,” he writes. “Maybe they will soon.”
