5 Questions For… Harry Smith

By Alissa Krinsky

Once again, folks, it’s “Five Questions,” time and we send a big thank-you to The Early Show’s Harry Smith for being our subject. Smith, who joined CBS News in 1986 as a Dallas-based correspondent, was born in Illinois and graduated from Iowa’s Central College. He and his wife, NBC Sports reporter Andrea Joyce, have two sons.

1. TVNewser: A perfect day for me:
Smith: Any day I am out of the building working on a story

2. TVNewser: I realized I was a grown-up…
Smith: When my wife, Andrea, became pregnant with our first child.

3. TVNewser: Best summer job during high school/college:
Smith: The summer after I graduated from eighth grade, my father sent me to work on a farm. I hated it — long hours, really hard work. I worked on that same farm every summer through my sophomore year in college. As much as I resented being out there, I learned a work ethic. I learned how to take pride in my work even if the task was menial. Really important life lesson.

4. TVNewser: My hero:
Smith: My mother, because she knew how to find joy in the simplest things. The first blooms of spring; a fresh breeze on a hot day; a robin’s song as the sun goes down. My mother was a remarkable person.

5. TVNewser: All-time favorite game show:
Smith: “Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me” on NPR — brilliant, hilarious, devilish and clever.
