With male viewers as FX’s target audience, creating a boxing drama for the cable network may seem like a no-brainer. But developing the project wasn’t easy. An initial pilot failed to wow executives.

A rewrite and a reshoot did, however, leading to a 13-episode order for Lights Out. Premiering Tuesday, January 11, the series stars Holt McCallany as former champion boxer Patrick “Lights” Leary, who has seen better days.
