Verizon FiOS TV announced plans Thursday (June 5) to expand its lineup of HD channels to as many as 150 by the end of the year. The pay TV service also plans to add hundreds of video-on-demand titles each month with 1,000 HD VOD titles available to subscribers by year’s end.
Beginning in July, HD options will roll out region by region to areas where FiOS TV is available. Included in the new content will be more than 25 HD channels, bringing the total number of HD channels to between 52 and 65, depending on the subscriber’s location.
Some of the channels in HD will include Lifetime, Animal Planet, Science Channel, TLC and Smithsonian Channel. FiOS TV’s movie package, already at 40 channels, will add five new HD channels from Starz and Showtime.
Verizon said it would make it a priority to provide all major sports programming in HD ad much as possible.
“We understand the importance of sports content to our customers, and we continue to work hard to bring the best in sports to FiOS TV,” said Terry Denson, vp of content and programming for FiOS TV.
Along with the HD channel expansion, FiOS plans to add other channels, including Setanta Sports, a premium channel for European and International soccer and rugby. FiOS also plans to add a number of sports channels in HD, such as Outdoor Channel.
FiOS TV is adding about 15 multicultural channels from WorldTV, such as channels for Arabic, Portuguese and Russian audiences.
FiOS TV service is available to more than 6.5 million homes in 13 states. Since it launched more than two years ago, the service has signed 1.2 million subscribers.
