TruTV Is Attracting a Younger Audience Thanks to New Comedy Shows and Specials

Turner network claims median age of 35

Though it won't present to advertisers for another week, truTV gave a hint at what it will say to buyers during its time at Turner's big upfront party on Wednesday, May 18.

Going into its second upfront since its rebrand into a more comedy-themed network, truTV says its median audience is now 35 years old, a full three years younger than a year ago and ranks among the top cable networks with young adults. The Turner network, which has experienced big growth on social media, is also coming off a strong March fueled by the airing of early-round NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament games, where truTV had 47.2 million video starts for its original content, the most its had in any month.

On the content side, truTV is adding three new series and a pair of specials, in addition to six more pilots in development.

First up, Greatest Ever, which debuts in July, is a pop-culture comedy countdown show hosted by comedian Amanda Seales. Jon Glaser, known better as Councilman Jamm on Parks & Recreation, will host a show about gear, aptly titled Jon Glaser Loves Gear. The third series, Lifescaping, gives advice on life skills like how to get a bartender's attention and the best ways to go on a road trip. TruTV is also doing a second life special with the Impractical Jokers this fall, as well as a 90-minute special with comedian Hari Kondabolu about the creation of popular Simpsons character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

On the renewals side, truTV has ordered new seasons of Fameless and Hack My Life, as well as the previously-announced scripted comedy Those Who Can't returns later this year for a second season. Additional episodes have also been ordered for two first-season series, Comedy Knockout and Rachel Dratch's Late Night Snack.

TruTV also reiterated its stance on reducing the amount of advertising in its shows, saying it would begin to cut ad time starting in the fourth quarter of this year, adding about 20 percent more content across its 45 original hours each quarter.
