Team Coco just can’t seem to catch a break. After a buzzy premiere last November, Conan O’Brien’s TBS program, Conan, has fallen behind Chelsea Handler’s E! show, Chelsea Lately, in the competitive late-night cable talk show race.
According to the latest ratings, Chelsea has pushed Conan out of third place in cable late-night thanks to a major influx of women viewers between 18 and 34, the New York Post reports. (Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and The Colbert Report hold the 1 and 2 spots, respectively.)
In June, Nielsen data showed Conan averaging just 743,000 total viewers, compared with 808,000 viewers for Chelsea Lately. Within the key 18-to-49 demo, Handler also topped O'Brien for the first time ever, with 559,000 viewers to Conan’s 503,000.
Conan’s drop in ratings is bad news for TBS, which lured O’Brien in with a huge $32 million deal and, leading up to his show’s debut, demanded ad rates as high as those usually reserved for premium broadcast TV.
