Star Wars: The Last Jedi Finally Has a Trailer, and It’s Packed With Enticingly Subtle Hints

You'll want to watch with headphones on

The wait for a first look at Star Wars Episode VIII is finally over, but now that we’ve been tantalized by a trailer, the true waiting is just beginning.

At the Star Wars Celebration event today in Orlando, Disney unveiled the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, scheduled for release Dec. 15 of this year.

As fans would hope, the story seems to pick up immediately after the events of Episode VII, with Rey apparently beginning her Jedi training under Luke Skywalker. The famed Jedi Master seems understandably reluctant, though, given that he’s been intentionally living as a hermit since his last star pupil turned into the patricidal Sith apprentice Kylo Ren.

The trailer is impressively light on spoilers, while still promising a solid amount of action. We still can’t tell the status of Finn since he was viciously slashed by Kylo Ren’s lightsaber, and it’s unclear what kind of counterstrike the First Order has in mind after losing its Starkiller Base to the nascent resistance.

But of course Disney expected intense scrutiny from fans who were sure to look behind the obvious scene selections, and there are plenty of enigmatic clues hidden for the observant.

At the :47 mark, we hear the barest whisper of what might be Leia saying “Help me, Obi-Wan.” At :53, Obi-Wan himself can be heard saying “seduced by the dark side.”

Are these simply callbacks to the earlier films now that Rey is training under Luke and perhaps sensing his memories? Or are they hints of something more intriguing, like the popular fan theory that Obi-Wan is Rey’s grandfather? Time will tell.
