Brian Lawlor has been named to head up The E.W. Scripps Company’s TV division as senior vp, the company announced Thursday (Nov. 6). He succeeds Bill Peterson who is retiring at the end of the year.

In his new position, beginning Jan. 1, 2009, Lawlor will oversee the company’s 10 TV stations, plus the Internet and digital businesses in nine of the nation’s largest markets, such as Detroit, Cleveland, Phoenix and Baltimore.

Since January, Lawlor has served as corporate vp of sales for the division, which on a segment-profit basis, is the largest division of the company.

“Unrivaled local news coverage, on air and across all digital platforms, will ensure the future success of the Scripps television businesses, and Brian already has demonstrated the leadership to deliver a product that both viewers and advertisers demand,” said Rich Boehne, president and CEO of Scripps.
