Mike and the Mad Dog, one of the biggest on-air teams in sports radio are splitting. Chris Russo, the “Mad Dog” half of the 19-year-old “Mike and the Mad Dog” afternoon drive show on CBS Radio sports WFAN-AM in New York, exited on Thursday, Aug. 14.

Mike Francesa, who signed a multiyear contract with CBS, will continue to host the show, for now called “Francesa on the FAN.”

The news isn’t a complete surprise. Rumors of the split surfaced as early as June.

“Mike and Chris pioneered the genre more than 18 years ago and have shaped the sports talk format into what it is today,” WFAN operations director Mark Chernoff said in a statement.
