Pretty Little Liars, the hit teen drama that redefined ABC Family and led to the network changing its name to Freeform, is ending its run after this season. The show's final 10 episodes—including a two-hour finale—will air beginning next April, Freeform announced today.
The news—announced on Facebook Live today by the cast and creator I. Marlene King—comes ahead of the teen drama's summer finale, which airs Tuesday night.
After debuting in 2010, the show—a teen drama based on the series of young adult mystery novels by Sara Shepard—became one of ABC Family's biggest hits, and propelled the cable network to becoming the No. 1 in women 18-34 for the first time last season.
The show has a huge social media following, with more than 14 million Facebook fans, 3.7 million Twitter followers and 5.8 million followers on Instagram.
Pretty Little Liars' success set the network on a new path, which caused it to evolve beyond its chaste moniker.
In January, the day of Pretty Little Liars' season premiere, ABC Family changed to Freeform, a name it hoped would better reflect its edgier content like The Fosters and Switched at Birth.
In network surveys, "We only over-index on two variables with nonviewers: 'family-friendly' and 'wholesome,'" president Tom Ascheim explained in January. "We needed to make it feel like there's less cognitive dissonance between what you're seeing and what we're called."
The network—known in the '90s as The Family Channel and later Fox Family, before Disney bought it in 2001—said its new name spoke to its target 14-34 audience, which it calls "Becomers."
King, the show's creator, said in a statement, "I'm excited for fans to finally have all of their questions answered, and I believe they will be satisfied with the wild ride that is our last 10 episodes," said
Pretty Little Liars might be going off the air, but King is staying right on Freeform. Her next soap, Famous in Love, which stars Bella Thorne and is based on the Rebecca Serle novel, will debut following Pretty Little Liars' final season premiere in April.
