Third overall was Fox, followed by ABC and more encore telecasts on The CW. In series-premiere news, ABC game show Downfall left little to be desired with a fourth-place 3.5 rating/6 share in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in Wipeout (#2: 5.6/ 9) was only 62 percent and there was a loss of 16 percent in the second half-hour (3.8/ 6 to 3.2/ 5). Considering how painful it was to see good merchandise (a car included) being loudly tossed to the ground at the end of a conveyor belt, chances are a good portion of the viewers who did tune in will not be back next week. I know I won’t. Downfall led into the season-premiere of Primetime: Mind Games, which dipped to a mere (and last-place) 2.9/ 5 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Earlier in the evening on ABC, reliable Wipeout remained just that with a second-place 5.5/10 in the overnights (which should be good enough to warrant a time period victory among adults 18-49). NBC started out weak care of Losing it With Jillian at a fourth-place 2.8/ 5 at 8 p.m. But summer favorite America’s Got Talent perked up to a time period winning 7.3/12 in the overnights from 9-11 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows: America’s Got Talent (NBC) 9:00 p.m.: 6.7/11 (#1) 9:30 p.m.: 7.3/11 (#1)10:00 p.m.: 7.6/12 (#1)10:30 p.m.: 7.6/13 (#1) CBS had nothing unusual to report, meanwhile, with its encore combination of NCIS (#1: 6.7/12), NCIS: Los Angeles (#2: 5.5/ 9) and The Good Wife (#2: 4.0/ 7). Over at Fox, two episodes of demo friendly Hell’s Kitchen averaged a 4.4/ 7 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows: Hell’s Kitchen (Fox)8:00 p.m.: 4.2/ 7 (#3)8:30 p.m.: 4.5/ 8 (#3)9:00 p.m.: 4.4/ 7 (#3)9:30 p.m.: 4.6/ 7 (#3) The CW closed the night with repeats of One Tree Hill (#5: 0.6/ 1), which is not strong enough to anchor Tuesday next season, and Life Unexpected (#5: 0.5/ 1), which is deserving of better lead-in support. Compared to one year earlier (which had no basketball in the mix), ABC built by margins of 92 percent (in households) to 167 percent (among adults 18-34) in the five surveyed categories. Elsewhere, CBS finished second in households and total viewers, while NBC and Fox tied for the No. 2 spot demographically (with Fox second in adults 18-49 and adults 18-34, and NBC the runner-up among adults 25-54). Boosted by five and-one-half hours of U.S. Golf coverage (including three hours on Saturday), NBC built year-to-year my margins of 18 to 29 percent. CBS, in contrast, was down in the five surveyed categories, while Fox and The CW were closer to year-ago levels. In series-premiere news, scripted ABC dramas Scoundrels and The Gates debuted on Sunday and fared as follows: Scoundrels (ABC) – Sunday 9 p.m.Viewers: 5.23 million (#34), A18-49: 1.3/ 4 (#38t) The Gates (ABC) – Sunday 10 p.m.Viewers: 4.76 million (#41), A18-49: 1.5/ 5 (#28t) Considering the competition was repeats and the promotion was considerable, this is a disappointing start for both dramas. There was one series-finale this week, Fox sitcom ‘Til Death, and it closed with a miniscule 1.53 million viewers (#83) and a 0.6/ 3 among adults 18-49 (tied for #78). In specials news, CBS got some traction from Wednesday 8 p.m. special TV’s Greatest Surprises, which averaged 6.58 million viewers (#19 overall) and a 1.5/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#28t). But Miley Cyrus: Live From London on ABC tanked in the Friday 8 p.m. hour, with just 2.60 million viewers (#72) and a 0.7/ 3 among adults 18-49 (#74t).
