Rich Russo, senior vp, director of broadcast services for JL Media and a former Mediaweek All-Star in radio, is getting his own radio show. On Sunday (Nov. 9) at 9 p.m., Russo will debut as host of Anything, Anything, a two-hour music intensive Rock program on WRXP-FM, Emmis Communications’ Rock station in New York. The program will also be streamed on the station’s Web site.
Known for his outspoken views on radio programming, Russo will now get his chance to show the business how its done. A music aficionado and collector of more than 100,000 vinyl records and CDs, Russo will select his own music, promising a deep play list.
“DJ’s need an identity and need to go beyond just playing what research or record labels are pitching which is the appeal of 101.9 RXP. Part of the woes of other radio rock stations, is the formula it has become. Focus groups and call out hooks, it’s ridiculous. A great song is a great song regardless of its source and the audience is hungry and wants the DJ to help them mold their music choices,” Russo said.
One artist Russo’s audience can expect will be in rotation: Bruce Springsteen. Russo, also a New Jersey native, has seen the E Street Band live in concert close to 400 times. He’s also seen nearly 50 Pearl Jam shows and numerous other bands.
