What’s the first information you consume in the morning?
I open my eyes around 8:30 a.m., but I like to tiptoe into the day. So I lounge around in bed listening to NPR in the background. I like the sound of reporters’ voices. They are soothing. If anything earth-shattering has happened overnight, I’ll hear about it even in my semi-sleep. Then I check texts, email and Twitter, all from bed.
What do you read or watch or listen to at the breakfast table?
When I get up, I get coffee and skim the New York Post to see if anyone I know got themselves involved in a scandal. I don’t eat breakfast or have a breakfast table, but if I did, I’d have a morning show on in the background and be reading a magazine. I don’t like my news too instant; it’s like someone yelling all the time. I lean toward weeklies like Newsweek or Time. The information is delayed a bit, nonessentials are weeded out, sources have been checked. What a novel idea.
What occupies your mind in the car, on the subway, train or bus?
Stories. I just finished my first novel and am starting another, so I’m living in imaginary places with imaginary people all the time.
Are you a TV junkie or on an airtime-restricted diet?
I like my TV in marathons. I’ll download an entire season of Mad Men or 30 Rock. I like my news bite-sized, but I like my entertainment shows biggie-sized. I’m watching a marathon of Snapped right now. Insane.
Before bed, do you bite into a novel, graze on Twitter or fast until morning?
I’m an insomniac, so I catch up on the real news on The Daily Show. I read obituaries, play on Twitter, watch late, late movies and bother my sister-in-law on the West Coast.
Which is more nutritious: print or Web?
I love a stack of magazines or books or a pile of newspapers at the door; nothing beats that. But I’m lazy too. You have to go out and get those things or else wait for them to come. So in that sense, the Web is more nutritious because it requires less effort to feed my brain.
What’s your biggest digital indulgence?
News bloopers. When I’m feeling blue, I watch bloopers, and I can’t help but laugh. Also, YouTube videos of kids screaming. We discover so young the agony and relentless toil of life.

I am so into Photogene right now. It allows you to write captions and thought bubbles directly on your pictures. My boyfriend sends me photos with naughty thought bubbles. It’s so fun!
With such a bloated media universe, how do you cut out the fat?
I don’t. I like fat in my food and in my news. But I’m a skimmer. I will skim through the first few paragraphs of any news or information website. I know a little about a lot of stuff.
