My Dad Says (CBS) -Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):Community (NBC), Outsourced (NBC), The Apprentice (NBC) ---------- -Ratings Breakdown:Despite facing baseball on Fox, CBS still dominated in the Thursday overnights with a 1.4 rating point advantage over Fox. Keep in mind that Cablevision subscribers in New York still have no access to Fox, which has negatively impacted the results. Next was ABC, followed by distant NBC and The CW. Red-hot The Big Bang Theory remained just that, with an 8.9 rating/15 share in the overnights at 8 p.m. That led into just full season renewed $#*! My Dad Says, which rose to a 7.0/11 at 8:30 p.m. -- its best overnight performance since debuting on Sept. 23. Together, the two sitcoms outdelivered year-ago occupant Survivor: Samoa (6.7/11 on Oct. 22, 2009) by a healthy 19 percent. Five-week overnight track for $#*! My Dad Says: $#*! My Dad Says (CBS) 9/23/10: 7.7/12 9/20/10: 6.7/1110/07/10: 6.3/1010/14/10: 6.6/1010/21/10: 7.0/11 Next on CBS, of course, was veteran CSI (#1: 9.5/15), which capitalized on the current odd interest in hoarders, followed by The Mentalist at a 9.7/17 at 10 p.m. While it certainly will not lead the evening among adults 18-49, The Mentalist once again was top-rated in the overnights. On Fox, game five of The National League Championship Series, Philadelphia vs. San Francisco, averaged an approximate 8.2/13 in the overnights in primetime, with the half-hour breakdown as follows: NLCS Game 5: Philadelphia vs. San Francisco (Fox) 8:00 p.m.: 6.6/11 (#2) 8:30 p.m.: 8.0/13 (#1) 9:00 p.m.: 7.5/12 (#3) 9:30 p.m.: 8.6/13 (#2)10:00 p.m.: 9.0/14 (#1)10:30 p.m.: 9.4/15 (#1) One year earlier, game five of the American League Championship Series (New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels) was virtually identical with an 8.0/13 on Oct. 22, 2009. Keep in mind, as always, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate. It was business as usual on ABC with its line-up of a repeat of Grey’s Anatomy (#4: 3.2/ 5), an original installment of Grey’s Anatomy (#2: 8.3/13), and spin-off Private Practice (#2: 5.7/ 9), which will narrow the gap among adults 18-49 opposite CBS’ aforementioned The Mentalist. At present, ABC has still not announced anything to officially step in for canceled My Generation at 8 p.m. NBC also had nothing unusual to report with its lackluster combination of comedies Community (#3t, 3.0/ 5), 30 Rock (#3: 3.9/ 6), The Office (#4: 4.6/ 7) and Outsourced (#4: 3.5/ 5) from 8-10 p.m., and failing The Apprentice at 10 p.m. (#4: 2.8/ 5). The Office always resonates among adults 18-49, but lead-out Outsourced dipped to a series low and not even Donald Trump can spin these horrific results for The Apprentice. Five-week overnight track for Outsourced: Outsourced (NBC) 9/23/10: 5.0/ 8 9/20/10: 4.1/ 610/07/10: 3.8/ 610/14/10: 3.8/ 610/21/10: 3.5/ 5 The CW closed the evening with dramas The Vampire Diaries (#5: 2.6/ 4) and Nikita (#5: 2.0/ 3). Source: Nielsen Media Research data (R = repeat)_____________________________________________________________________________ Ratings Box:What’s Hot/What’s Not -Impressive Judge Karen:Based on the live plus same day ratings for the week of Oct. 4, there is an interesting observation in syndicated court that needs to be singled out: the return of Judge Karen’s Court from Litton Entertainment. On paper, a 1.0 GAA (gross average audience) rating in households puts Karen in a tie for No. 8 (out of 10 strips) with Judge Jeanine Pirro from Warner Bros. But Karen’s coverage, 78 percent, is considerably below all the returning gavelers. As the station count increases, keep an upward eye on Judge Karen. Also in court that week were freshman occupants Swift Justice with Nancy Grace from CBS Television Distribution (2.1 rating: 97 percent coverage) and America’s Court with Judge Ross from Entertainment Studios (0.4 rating: 92 percent coverage). ---------- -New Series Report Card:Based on Live Plus Same Day ratings, here are the results (in order of total viewers) for the freshman Wednesday class: CBS’ The Defenders, NBC’s Undercovers and Law & Order: Los Angeles, and ABC’s Better with You and The Whole Truth. Hellcats on The CW was a repeat and is not included. The Defenders (CBS) – Wed. 10 p.m.Viewers: 10.03 million (#1), A18-49: 2.3/ 7 (#2)Grade: C Retention out of Criminal Minds this week (Viewers: 14.46 million; A18-49: 3.7/10 at 9 p.m.) was 69 percent in total viewers and 62 percent among adults 18-49. And year-ago occupant CSI: NY was notably stronger at 13.01 million viewers and a 3.0/ 8 in the demo (on Oct. 21, 2009). While The Defenders was just renewed for the full season, CBS could be doing better here. -----Law & Order: Los Angeles (NBC) – Wed. 10 p.m.Viewers: 8.12 million (#2), A18-49: 2.4/ 7 (#1)Grade: B- Competing The Defenders on CBS has more viewers, but LOLA gets a better grade because of the stronger retention out of Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: 8.74 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 7 at 9 p.m.), the improvement over year-ago flop The Jay Leno Show (Viewers: 5.14 million; A18-49: 1.5/ 4 on Oct. 21, 2009), and the time period victory in adults 18-49.-----Better with You (ABC) – Wed. 8:30 p.m.Viewers: 6.83 million (#3), A18-49: 2.1/ 6 (#3)Grade: C- Considering HUT levels are higher at 8:30 p.m., sitcom Better with You should not be dropping by 1.71 million viewers (8.54 to 6.83 million) and 19 percent among adults 18-49 (2.6/ 8 to 2.1/ 6) out of The Middle.
