For Jim Nantz, Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Airport Flattery

CBS broadcaster guests on The Dan Patrick Show - Pebble Beach edition

During the second of two road-shows from the site of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Dan Patrick and the Danettes welcomed their good friend Jim Nantz. Lots of topics were covered, including the breaking news that Tiger Woods has withdrawn from his next two planned tournaments.

There was also some hilarious perspective offered up by Nantz about a certain Masters-broadcast-imitation competition. Every year around the time of the Augusta tournament, the DP Show invites listeners to phone in and intone, above some instantly recognizable musical accompaniment, their best Jim Nantz CBS Masters coverage intro. Explained Nantz:

“I actually get a lot of feedback about that. I do. Oh, I get people that stop me. I’m not saying every day, but a good once a month, I’ll walk through an airport, and someone will come over and ask me what I think about it.”

“And then just, without asking, they will go right into it [their soundalike imitation]. They’ll say, ‘I’ve thought about calling into Dan’s show, what do you think?’ And I’ll say, ‘That will win. You’ve got to do it!’ And on I go to my gate.”

Nantz, who has lived in Pebble Beach for five years, is heading up this weekend’s CBS coverage of the AT&T-sponsored event. Amateur players include a certain low-to-the-ground driving NFL coach.
