Mark Mason has been named to the newly created position of VP of digital media for CBS Radio’s New York properties, effective Jan. 5, 2009. Mason, who previously served as PD for news WINS/New York and VP of news programming for CBS Radio’s all-news stations, will relinquish his PD role to the station’s news director, Ben Mevorach.
News KYW-AM/Philadelphia PD Steve Butler will take over as VP of news programming for CBS Radio.
Working with station Web managers and local sales teams for news WCBS-AM, classic hits WCBS-FM, sports WFAN, WINS, AC WWFS and rock WXRK, Mason will manage online content offerings and develop programming and sales strategies to boost traffic on the cluster’s six Web sites. They currently generate over 16.5 million page views monthly, and listeners streamed more than 4.2 million hours of online radio programming during that time period.
“I am very happy to have Mark at the helm of our digital initiatives — all of our efforts in this space will benefit greatly from his programming expertise,” said senior VP/New York market manager Don Bouloukos. “Having led the most successful all-news station in the country, Mark has an exceptional understanding of how to deliver relevant information in a concise and timely manner. And he, more than anyone I’ve worked with, has been able to translate that skill online to the benefit of millions of listeners.”
“I’ve worked in the radio industry for quite some time but never have I seen such a renaissance to lead the medium to new heights,” said Mason. “From the day we entered the digital space, I’ve been amazed to see such a loyal following not only from our over-the-air listeners, but a whole new generation of listeners — young and old — from across the country.”
Mason has been the executive editor/PD of WINS since 1996. He recently took on programming responsibilities for news/talk KDKA/Pittsburgh and will continue to advise the station.
