When Discovery Communications announced in 2008 its plans to launch the Oprah Winfrey Network, few industry analysts bet against it. After all, even if Winfrey drew a small percentage of the 6 million or so loyal viewers of her syndicated talk show, it would make a dent in the ratings.

And, of course, it did.

During the network’s debut weekend beginning Saturday, Jan. 1, the cable network drew more than 1 million viewers in such highly trafficked time slots as 8 p.m.
