ABC Sets Fall Premiere Schedule, Including Its New Kiefer Sutherland Drama

Designated Survivor debuts Sept. 21

A week after the other four broadcast networks locked in their fall premiere dates, ABC is finally ready to join the party.

The network announced the fall debuts for its returning shows and five new series—including new Kiefer Sutherland drama Designated Survivor, which premieres Wednesday, Sept. 21—the network's first full season under new ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey. "The schedule very much reflects my sensibility about where I think the network is and where we want to be going," Dungey said last month.

Dancing With the Stars helps kick off fall for ABC on Monday, Sept. 12, with its Season 23 premiere. Curiously, ABC is holding back its new Monday night drama, Conviction—"This is the procedural we've been looking for," Dungey said last month—until Oct. 3, instead of airing it on Sept. 19, the day after it broadcasts the 68th Emmy Awards.

But most of the network's other shows will debut during the week of Sept. 19 (the first week of the 2016-17 season), including its Wednesday comedy block featuring new comedy Speechless, followed by new drama Designated Survivor, starring Kiefer Sutherland. On Thursday, Sept. 22, ABC will roll out its new TGIT lineup, which for the first time won't include Scandal. The drama is delayed until midseason to accommodate Kerry Washington's pregnancy. New drama Notorious, the first TGIT series not produced by Shonda Rhimes, will air in its place.

However, ABC's Tuesday night comedies—including new comedy American Housewife—won't premiere until Oct. 11. Trailers for all of ABC's fall shows can be found here.

Missing from the schedule are long-running dramas Castle and Nashville, both of which Dungey canceled last month, though Nashville was rescued earlier this month by CMT.

ABC revealed its fall lineups a week after NBC, Fox, The CW and CBS announced their plans.
