Today in Things That Are Not Made Up, famous Internet cat Lil Bub will host a talk show anchoring a new Discovery Communications digital venture called Animalist, created and developed by the company's video studio Revision3.
If you don't know who Phil DeFranco is, you probably should. DeFranco is huge on YouTube—like 2.6-million-subscribers-1-billion-views huge. His channel SourceFed, which blends news, politics and humor, is often cited as the most successful of the much-hyped YouTube funded channels. DeFranco recently expanded, launching SourceFed Nerd two weeks ago (it's already over 1.3 million views).On Thursday, it was announced that Discovery Communications' Revision3 (a pioneer in Web video programming) fully acquired DeFranco's collection of channels, along with his merchandising business. He'll stay on as a programming exec. DeFranco spoke to Adweek about the changes:
Discovery Communications has launched TestTube, a free, ad-supported video network targeted at young males, The Wall Street Journal reported.TestTube is the product of Internet television studio Revision3, acquired by Discovery last year in an estimated $30-40 million deal. The network will launch with 10 million streams and is expected to grow to 20 million streams by the end of 2013.TestTube will reportedly showcase original content aimed at a young, male audience, with 15 new series such as techno-philosophy talk show Shots of Awe; Blow it Up, hosted by MythBusters personality Tory Belleci; and Nature Hates You, a series of flip exposés of the sinister side of natural-world things like vines and dust.
Discovery Communications has acquired San Francisco-based digital video provider Revision3, a company that creates Web-based video content with a heavy emphasis on gaming and tech.The deal had been rumored all week, but Discovery made the official announcement today. Discovery declined to talk terms, but sources close to the deal put the price tag in the $30 million range.
