YouTube Crime Fighters: Is Online Video More Effective Than The Police At Nabbing Criminals?

In recent months a new way to fight crime has emerged - YouTube! More and more victims are posting videos online to help them solve crimes and catch culprits. YouTube has already brought a number of bad guys to justice! It's about time that an alternative to the police has emerged, which allows victims to hunt down the people that have wronged them on their own. If you've ever been robbed, or wronged in some other way, then you know that the police don't do much to find the offender. So why not take matters into your own hands on the web? Do you remember the story of the woman that threw a cat in a garbage bin back in August? The woman was caught on security tape and the cat's owners uploaded the video to YouTube and turned to YouTubers and Facebookers to help them find the woman. The woman was quickly found, with the help of people who watched the online video, and she was punished accordingly. If the owners had not uploaded the security video to YouTube, the "cat bin lady" may still be on the loose today, throwing more cats in garbage bins. And the cat bin lady isn't the only "criminal" to be brought to justice thanks to web video. Shortly after that story, another video hit the web of a Bosnian girl throwing a bucket of puppies into a river. The video was pretty disturbing and luckily the girl was arrested as well, following major Facebook protests. I wish I could say that those two stories were the end of animal cruelty on the web, but yet another video has hit the web this week of some kids in Sicily punting a cat and laughing. Watch the video at your own risk, it really is quite horrible. As far as I know, these guys haven't been caught yet, but I can only hope someone will see this video and turn these guys in. Fighting crime on YouTube hasn't been confined to animal cruelty alone. At the end of October, the father of a 13-year old girl who was abducted, uploaded a video to YouTube in hopes that it would help get his daughter home. The video has been taken down from YouTube, but the good news is that the girl, Miranda Hemphill, was found. Whether or not it has anything to do with her father's video is unknown. However, this is yet another example of how people are using YouTube to fight crime and take the law into their own hands. Even kids are using YouTube to hunt down criminals and thieves. The kid in the video below is really frustrated because "some dude" stole his backpack with pictures of Iron Man, Thor, Wolverine and Spiderman. The worst part is that the backpack also had some of his Halloween candy in it! I don't know about you, but I really want this kid to get his backpack back.
