YouTube To Shut The Door On YouTube Create

By Megan O'Neill

At the end of this month YouTube Create, a resource on YouTube’s website featuring third-party apps like Xtranormal, WeVideo, GoAnimate, Vlix, Magisto, Stupeflix and other video creation tools, will be shutting its doors.  YouTube Create launched nearly two years ago but, according to GigaOM and a number of folks familiar with the issue, it will be shut down at the end of this month (i.e. after today).

Janko Roettgers of GigaOM reports that, “it looks like Create never got all that much traction, which is why YouTube is now shutting the showcase down on January 31.  Apps featured on Create will still be able to make use of the YouTube API after that date, which allows them to essentially operate as third-party video editors for the site, complete with an option to upload edited videos directly to YouTube.”

The difference is that the YouTube Create partners will no longer be specifically featured on YouTube at  Additionally, there will no longer be iframe integration.

Mark Floisand, VP President of Sales and Marketing and WeVideo, one of the apps that was featured on Create, told Roettgers, “We think it’s a pity that the program is ending, as it provided YouTube users with a variety of easy-to-find options for video creation and production.”

Although the YouTube Create page is still up, and even includes a link for third-party apps that want to “Become a partner,” all existing partners received an email from YouTube earlier this month stating that “we plan to retire the page by Jan 31st, 2013.”

We’ll be keeping an eye on the site to see how this plays out and we’d love to hear your thoughts on the end of YouTube Create in the comments below.
