Happy Birthday, YouTube!  Six years ago YouTube burst its way onto the Web scene and it’s been uphill ever since.  Today, in honor of their sixth birthday, YouTube announced that it has reached two new landmarks.  Users are now uploading more than 48 hours of video footage per minute, and accounting for more than 3 billion videos per day!

The big news was just announced on the YouTube blog.  The YouTube team writes, “Back in November we challenged you to up the volume of videos you uploaded to the site.  And boy, did you take the bait.  Today, more than 48 hours (two days worth) of video are uploaded to the site every minute, a 37% increase over the last six months and 100% over last year.”  The last announcement about video uploads came back in November, when YouTube announced that YouTubers were uploading over 35 hours of video per minute.

Two days of video in a minute is a lot!  The YouTube Team points out that there’s a lot you could do in two days.  You could drive non-stop across the United States, you could watch all of the Back To The Future movies eight and a half times…48 hours is a whole lotta video!

But wait…there’s more!  YouTube also announced that over this last weekend, viewers drove YouTube past the 3 billion views per day mark.  That’s a whopping 50% increase over last year.  Pretty impressive.

The YouTube Team says on the blog that, “The first six years of a person’s life are incredibly important for development.  The same could be said for a company.  For the last six years we’ve grown and evolved in our quest to push video forward and deliver the best possible experience to you.  So when will we reach 72 hours a minute, or 4 billion views a day?  That’s up to you.”

Congratulations, YouTube!  You deserve a standing ovation!
