Yahoo! Weather Review

Yahoo! Weather is an iOS and Android app from Yahoo! It is available now as a free download, with no additional in-app purchases. Serious travelers, weather watchers, or those looking to keep an eye on other parts of the country will often need more than the stock weather options on their mobile device. On that end, Yahoo! Weather has them covered. The app covers the standard information—such as temperature, precipitation, and humidity—and presents both the current outlook and the predictions for the next few days. Most people may not care about certain pieces of info, like moon visibility, but the app provides everyone the information they need to know to go about their day and their week. Setting up Yahoo! Weather is as simple as installing it and setting your location. The number of locations is outstanding and the app was able to find accurate data for both major metropolitan areas and small towns. Those with a Yahoo! account who may already be using Yahoo! Weather are able to log into the app and have all their data transferred over in an instant. Alternatively, users can also connect their Facebook account to the app and the locations set on their Facebook profile will be imported as their Yahoo! Weather locations. Yahoo! never requires users to log into an account to set their locations, however. The list of locations can be edited from any time in the settings, and removing them is as easy as clicking a delete button. Once the locations are set, Yahoo! Weather begins to flourish. While the device is in portrait orientation, the main screen of the app shows the user’s current location, and swiping left and right will scroll through the other set locations, in an order that is fully customizable. These screens will show basic information like current temperature, the day’s highs and lows, and current cloud coverage. On the bottom, there’s a bar that displays a somewhat detailed forecast for the next four days. All this information is brought together by Flickr photos of each location that range from skylines, to landmarks, to stock photos. These photos are of high-quality, colorful and add a pleasing touch to the interface. Users can also share them on social media. Rotating to a landscape layout will provide a larger wealth of information, like sunrise/sunset, wind speed and direction, and barometric pressure. This view ditches the four-day forecast and the background images in favor of the detailed report, but the mass of information makes up for it. There are no built-in radars, maps, or severe weather alerts. The app can be set to provide regular updates for certain locations, but selecting maps and detailed alerts will open a web browser to the Yahoo! Weather website. From there, there are detailed reports and maps, but their absence from the actual app is a negative experience and the inconvenience of jumping in and out of the app may be a deal breaker for most users. Yahoo! Weather is a very basic, but mostly effective, weather application. Being an official Yahoo! app, the interface isn’t cluttered with ads, nor does it ask for any purchases at any time. The ability to set numerous locations and get notifications for each of them is likely to be the biggest draw for most users, and the sleek—but simple—interface creates an experience that is easy to use. With no pressure to link Yahoo! or Facebook accounts, users can simply download and use the app without hassle. It’s easy to recommend Yahoo! Weather to those who just need basic information. Serious weather watchers will find a great deal of information as well, but the lack of reports and maps will leave them wanting more. You can follow Yahoo!
