Yahoo!, Twitter Finally Team Up

Tweets are only 140 characters or fewer: What took so long? Yahoo! and Twitter announced a global partnership Tuesday including extensive integration between the search-engine and Web-content giant and the microblogging service. Under terms of the agreement, users will be able to access their personal Twitter feeds via Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Sports, the Yahoo! homepage and other sites, as well as updating their status via Yahoo!. And real-time tweets will be incorporated into Yahoo! Search and other sites including its News, Finance, Entertainment, and Sports pages. Yahoo! vice president of communities Jim Stoneham told CNET his company will now receive content directly via the Twitter fire hose, rather than having to pull it through public application-program interfaces. Yahoo! senior vice president, consumer products group Bryan Lamkin said in a statement: Let me try to capture the enormity of this integration in 140 characters or less: We're turning the key to the online social universe -- you will find the most personally relevant experiences through Yahoo!. We're also simplifying people's lives by bringing their social worlds -- and the world -- together for easy access. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone added: The information in one single tweet can travel light years farther with this Yahoo! integration. Tweets in more places brings relevance where and when you need it most. And in a post on the Twitter Blog titled Expressing Great Joy or Excitement, Stone said: In other words: Yahoo! people want to discover and share tweets everywhere ranging from SMS and TV, to apps and the Web. For a global network of 600 million people, Yahoo! represents the Web. Similar to the partnerships we have made with other large internet companies, Yahoo! will receive what has been dubbed "Firehose" -- a full feed of public tweets sent to Twitter and our partners every second of every day from all around the world. Through this arrangement, people will be able to find relevant tweets in Yahoo! Search, as well as other popular products and properties, including the Yahoo! homepage, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Sports, and more. Yahoo! will also be able to build unique Twitter clients into their properties, making it easier for folks to tweet wherever they feel comfortable within the Yahoo! network. From our perspective, this partnership represents a big opportunity. Tweets may be short, but they have proven over and over again to contain valuable information. As the Twitter information network grows and expands, it becomes more valuable for everyone who participates. Our open approach helps us get closer to providing universal connectivity to a global network of immediate information.
