What Developers Need To Know About The New Wibiya Developer Platform

Popular social web toolbar Wibiya has just launched a new web developer platform, allowing developers to submit and integrate their own 3rd party applications through an open API. This is great news for developers, who will be able to take advantage of a Wibiya's distribution channel to share their apps with hundreds of thousands of Web publishers, bloggers and more across the web. For those of you that aren't familiar with Wibiya, the company provides a social toolbar that allows publishers to instantly integrate their entire web presence into their site. When users visit sites with the Wibiya toolbar they can access Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social sites and applications directly from the website for a uniquely social experience. The new developer platform will give developers the opportunity to incorporate their own applications into the Wibiya marketplace, where publishers using the Wibiya toolbar will be able to incorporate these applications into their own sites. So what's so great about Wibiya and how can the new platform help you, as a developer? For starters, Wibiya currently reaches more than 175 million unique users each month. More than 80,000 active websites have installed the Wibiya toolbar and each month more than 25,000 new websites join the Wibiya network. This means that if you integrate your own third party application using Wibiya's new developer platform your app could potentially be used by a huge number of Wibiya users. In a press release about the new developer platform, Wibiya explains the broad spectrum of apps that can be submitted through the new API: "Developers are now invited to submit different types of applications from toolbar apps to website plug-ins that are not toolbar related, any type of technology is welcome including API mash-ups." How do you submit your application to Wibiya? The application process is extremely simple, with developers having to go through a simple registration process, which includes submitting general information about the application and graphics for the Wibiya marketplace. Developers will have access to statistics about activity related to their applications, including the number of websites that have installed their application and the names of top websites that are using their app. Wibiya CEO Dror Ceder talks about why this is such a great opportunity for developers. He says, "Wibiya has a very large growing number of websites from many different verticals that are craving new apps tailored to their specific needs. We have been getting many requests for many different types of apps such as location-based apps, ecommerce apps, finance apps and more. Imagine developing an app and then finding out that a top newspaper started using it, or seeing it on thousands of websites without lifting a finger. This is the kind of power we offer developers for free." In addition to the new developer platform, Wibiya also announced that they have partnered with Yahoo!, AddThis and Bit.ly to ease developers use of APIs across the platforms and to create new apps for Wibiya. Ceder says, "We are happy to be a bridge between great services, developers and websites, and more partners will be announced in time." Developers can also look forward to the introduction of a Mobile API, Social Connect API and Wibiya Boxes API in the near future.
