What's up Doc? Tweeting Physicians Acting Unprofessional Online

If you are sending @replies back and forth with your physician about your fungal problem, you might want to question the overall professionalism of your doctor. A new study has found that doctors who tweet are potentially breaching their ethical obligations, sending tweets with confidential patient information or making suspect claims about medical products.

The study, conducted by researchers from the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, found that the majority of tweets sent by physicians were useful and in-line with standards of professionalism; however, those that were not, should be monitored.

The main researcher, Katherine Chretien, has this to say about the doctors’ tweets:

“While the majority of tweets were potentially helpful, the ethical breaches and unprofessional content raised a red flag.”
