What do Americans Know About the Internet, Technology and Twitter?
More than eight in 10 Americans know that hashtags are widely used on Twitter, and almost two-thirds are also aware that the platform has a 140 character limit, reveals a new poll.
To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the World Wide Web, the Pew Research Center surveyed more than 1,000 U.S. adults about their knowledge of the internet. While a substantial majority of Americans do not use Twitter, Pew found that their working knowledge of the platform was still pretty good – 82 percent knew that hashtags were used on Twitter, while 60 percent had knowledge of its 140 character maximum.
Other questions asked in the study, which included whether a kilobyte or megabyte can hold more information, what “URL” stands for and when the iPhone was first released, are listed below.
