Vimeo To Launch Pay-To-View Movies In 2013

Movies are coming to Vimeo!  This morning the online video streaming site announced that it plans to launch a new pay-to-view service early next year at and, as a preview, they’ve made six full-length films available for purchase.

Starting today, Vimeo users can purchase a variety of films that, according to Vimeo’s Jeremy Boxer, are “hand-picked by us and thereby deemed certifiably awesome.”  They include We Are Legion, Jeremy Jones’ Further, Beauty is Embarrassing, Sunny, Shut Up And Play The Hits, and Sons Of The Clouds.  Price and rental duration seem to differ from movie to movie, with some being $5.00 for a viewing period of 7 days, others being $4.99 for 2 days, and still others being $9.00 for 60 days.

Boxer writes, “Our mission is to support totally original video and the people who create it, which means providing more than a home.  It means creating an environment where creators can access the resources to make their next film, and the one after that.  Our new pay-to-view service enables creators to upload and distribute work that they depend on for their livelihood, all with easy setup and affordable rates.  In turn, our community gets access to amazing work from the world’s leading filmmakers.”

Vimeo Movies seems to be part of a continuing effort on the part of Vimeo to finally let creators make money off their content.  Back in September they launched the Vimeo Tip Jar, letting creators receive tips from viewers.  When they made the Tip Jar announcement they also announced that pay-to-view was coming soon.  Now it’s finally here.
