Universal Music Publishing Artists Go SE Uncut

Sony Ericsson has hooked up with Universal Music Publishing in a deal that has the music publisher allowing its artists to promote themselves on the handset’s PlayNow Uncut, a Web and mobile music service for rising acts.

What makes the deal interesting is, according to mocoNews, artists that choose to promote their music on the service will forgo typical licensing rights and instead will get paid only when fans buy their tunes.

A Sony Ericsson spokesman told the publication that the idea is to give the artists exposure and the possibility of getting a deal with a label.

Of course, isn’t that what the Internet’s all about for musicians anyway?
