UAE Twitter Users Told They Must Tweet Respectfully About Islam, Government In Regulator Infographic

Twitter users in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been warned about what they can and cannot tweet on the social network by one of the country’s official bodies.

The UAE has 360,000 Twitter users who send around 2.5 million tweets each day. Like many Gulf states, the region closely monitors activity on all social networks. Last year, an Abu Dhabi court imprisoned a man for two years for tweeting about a political trial.

“Do not publish content that is contrary to public morals, the principles of Islam, the social and moral welfare of the UAE or anything that contains irreverence towards Islam or the other heavenly religions,” writes the UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in an infographic release which, while imposing political and religious censorship, is curiously upbeat.

The
