Turkey Removes Twitter Ban After Court Ruling

After blocking access to Twitter on March 21 and increasing the severity of that ban a few days later, Turkey has finally lifted the suspension of Twitter across the country after the nation’s Constitutional Court ruled that the move, which was widely condemned, had breached freedom of expression.

T.C. Resmi Gazete, Turkey’s national and only official newspaper, published the Constitutional Court’s ruling earlier this morning, increasing pressure on authorities to lift the ban, and led to legal action being taken by Twitter.

“The ban has been lifted,” an official from Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s office told Reuters. Twitter said it welcomed the ruling.

At the time of writing YouTube remains blocked in Turkey, with the site being suspended a week after the Twitter ban.
