A Twitter Spring Cleaning Checklist

Today, Wednesday, March 20, is the first official day of spring. And with the sun finally peeping out, and flower buds starting to bloom, it's time to break out the vacuums and feather dusters for a little spring cleaning. Have you ever considered applying those principles - using the start of a sunny new season as an opportunity to clean out and spruce up - to your Twitter account? Here are a few suggestions for some Twitter spring cleaning. Update your bio and photo As we’ve written before, your Twitter bio is a key component of your social media identity, and a prime location for branding and visibility on Twitter. And since your bio is limited to 160 characters, why not make them count? Here are a few tips for sprucing up your Twitter bio. As for your profile photo, take this opportunity to upload a recent image that you feel best reflects you. Give your Twitter profile design a refresh With Twitter's new(ish) cover photos, you've got two opportunities to inject a little personality into your Twitter profile: your background and your cover shot. Clean up the list of people who you follow Now's a good time to dig into the list of people you follow on Twitter, assessing who's never followed you back, removing dead accounts, and evaluating whether or not you appreciate receiving tweets from each person you follow. Fine-tune your tweeting strategy Flying by the seat of your pants when it comes to Twitter is fine - but it won't give you the best experience possible, with the maximum potential for contact-building, networking, and reliable information reception. During your Twitter spring cleaning, take a look at how you approach Twitter: how many times a day do you generally tweet? How many of those tweets contain shortened links? How many contain RTs? How many days go by between receiving a mention and responding to it? If you don't already use a social media management tool like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck, consider doing so. Clean up your app permissions It can be hard to keep track of all the apps you’ve given permission to access any of your social media profiles, from Facebook to Twitter to Instagram to Pinterest. But it’s important to stay on top of what sites or apps have access to your personal information and activity, for the sake of your online privacy. We all know what happened to Mat Honan of Wired. You can go app-by-app configuring your permissions.
