In the past 24 hours, you might have noticed that Twitter has been acting strange. The service had gone down for some users, and many features (such as tweeting, retweeting, viewing your timeline) were only sporadically available. Twitter acknowledged the problems on its status blog and has fixed them, but there may be more to come.
The Twitter Status blog has announced two separate issues in the past 17 hours. Yesterday, access to some features, such as tweeting and retweeting, was down for many users. And just three hours ago, Twitter users began experiencing delays in their timelines.
Both issues have been resolved as of press time, but it’s interesting to see two disruptions of service in such a short period of time.
The engineering team at Twitter has vastly improved access to the service compared to a few years ago, when users could regularly expect to see the Fail Whale a few times a week when they tried to log in to Twitter.com. However, Twitter still does experience it’s share of outages.
Just yesterday, Twitter announced that users would be able to access Twitter.com and other official Twitter apps using a secured, HTTPS connection by updating their settings. This ensures safer tweeting, especially on an unsecured wi-fi connection.
While we haven’t received confirmation yet, the recent spate of Twitter downtime could have something to do with the implementation of the secured HTTPS connection. We are waiting to hear back from a Twitter representative about what caused the downtime, and whether it was tied to HTTPS.
In the meantime, Twitter appears to be working smoothly this morning, but there could be more outages if the underlying issue of the HTTPS implementation hasn’t been solved.
