The 86th Academy Awards was, by all accounts, a major success, picking up its biggest television audience in a decade and generating a serious amount of buzz across social media – notably Twitter, where a celebrity-packed selfie tweet quickly became the most retweeted tweet of all time.
Indeed, the chatter was so significant on Twitter that tweets about the Oscars were viewed over 3.3 billion times worldwide.
Of course, Twitter has about 241 million active users, which means that each one of us saw more than 10 tweets about the Academy Awards. I know I did – in fact, probably a lot more than that.
Indeed, when you break it down, Twitter says that 19.1 million tweets were sent about the Oscars between 5pm ET Sunday and 5am ET Monday. These tweets were written by just 5 million people, and seen by 37 million across Twitter.com and Twitter’s mobile and desktop apps (note: excludes third party apps, such as HootSuite).
The way we measure views is by looking at a metric known as impressions: how many times Tweets are displayed to users. On top of that, many Tweets about the Oscars gained exposure across the web, as journalists and publishers embedded them on websites where they could reach a new audience.
