According to AdAge, Twitter is developing geo-targeted ads for retailers to help business owners locate consumers “within spitting distance of their stores.”
AdAge claims that the product could be ready to launch as soon as later this year.
It would be a dream service for shop owners looking to drive foot traffic into their brick-and-mortar stores, which they can already do via Facebook.
The ‘book has offered zip code targeting for several years now, while Twitter Advertising currently offers nothing like that.
But since Twitter already displays trending topics based on geographic location, and just purchased search technology company Spindle, it looks like geotargeting is high on the company’s priority list.
Once Twitter rolls out hyperlocal ad targeting, imagine the implication for users. You could see what’s trending on Twitter on a much more granular level – even in your specific neighborhood.
The question, as Tech Crunch points out, will be whether tweets or Facebook ads prove to be the better sales conversion tool for brands when it comes to drawing people into physical stores.
