Twitter will be focusing even more on its global expansion this year with today’s announcement of a Translation Center. The company will provide volunteer-powered translations of its website in multiple language, hoping to appeal to its widening international user base.
Twitter has launched its Translation Center with the seven language that it currently, officially supports: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. It has also launched with Indonesian, Russian and Turkish. Twitter users who speak those languages can access the Translation Center and begin translating immediately.
This year, Twitter will be adding support for several more languages, including Portuguese. They also have plans to add Arabic and Hebrew support, after technical issues of displaying a language right-to-left have been addressed.
The Twitter Blog notes that users will not be translating tweets themselves, but rather the Twitter product itself – the home page, the sidebar and more.
The Translation Center allows users to translate Twitter.com, mobile.twitter.com, Twitter for iPhone, Twitter for iPad, Twitter for Android, Twitter Help and the Twitter Business Center.
The idea of crowdsourcing translation fits nicely with Twitter’s history as a community-driven platform. Hashtags and many other Twitter features were first introduced by the Twitter community, and officially adopted by Twitter itself after the fact.
